“If you have a body, you’re an athlete.”
First announced back in March of this year with a promotional campaign featuring figure skater Zahra Lari of the UEA, Nike’s Pro Hijab is now available online and in stores.
Retailing at £24.95, the Nike Pro Hijab isn’t the first of its kind on the market, but, Nike is by far the biggest sportswear brand to release an athletic hijab, and have extensive publicity around it. Although the announcement back in March caused some controversy amongst the alt-right, it garnered a lot of praise amongst those who matter the most – the women it was designed for, as many are celebrating its release and expressing their excitement at this big move by Nike.
With a lightweight pull-on design, the pro hijab has been put through its paces by women athletes of all disciplines that wear a hijab to make sure it is perfectly designed for optimum performance and versatility across many different sports.
Nike said of the hijab: “The Nike Pro Hijab has been a year in the making, but its impetus can be traced much further back to Nike’s founding mission, to serve athletes, with the signature addendum: If you have a body, you’re an athlete.”
It’s a huge step forward for equality in sports, offering female Muslim athletes a means to compete in comfort, whilst staying true to their beliefs and dominating in their disciplines.
