Get To Know: Matilda Derf, The Influencer Making Positive Waves Online

If you don’t know her yet, you should.

Swedish influencer Matilda Djerf is opening up conversations on health, exercise, beauty and wellbeing in an accessible and friendly way. With over 400, 000 Instagram followers and a popular blog she’s loved by many. Despite the following however, she doesn’t carry the “influencer” title in the way we’re used to on social media. Instead, Matilda shares parts of her life online with a consciousness of the effects that social media has on us.

Definitely not the live I had in mind. Thank you for being patient with me while a nasty comment just hit a little too hard. I’m just a human and I have feelings. And it was impossible for me to hide it this time. Sometimes you just have to let yourself feel. Thank you for picking me back up and for accepting me as I am. I always want to be transparent and unfiltered with you. I love you guys so much. Your support and your words mean the world to me. Act with love and respect, always. And please make sure to think twice before you speak or comment. Ps. The comment is deleted and I don’t want to get into it too much again but I just want to say that it took me so many years to get healthy from my ED and to start accepting myself as I am. To have someone say I made it all up for attention is just sickening. Just because my eating disorder is a “small problem” for someone doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to feel what I do. Like my strong, lovely follower commented “everyone is fighting their own battles – some physical, mental and some emotional. My problems do not invalidate someone else’s. Everyone should be able to freely express their problems without someone saying “others got it worse”.”

With genuine care for the wellbeing of her followers, Matilda has created a space online whereby the topics that can typically be damaging for young women are not. Exercise is seen as a positive thing to do for yourself rather than a form of self-punishment, where fashion can be enjoyed by anyone and where products are recommended with belief and creativity.

Her style is of course something that can’t be forgotten either. From vintage finds to her own designs, Matilda strives to contribute to the industry in a positive way whilst judgement from others is at a peak. Thankfully, with women such as Matilda we are given an honest and uplifting roadmap to navigate the complex space of the online world.
